How to Have a Rich Life Without Being Rich

by Emily

I’m a big believer in you don’t need a lot of money to live a rich life. In today’s society, it’s so easy to get carried away with wanting more and not feeling like you make enough, especially with social media being ever-present. If you remember certain things, you can have the richest life without spending a dime.

Think about what brings you joy

Chances are a lot of those things don’t involve money. Some of my favorite moments in my life are the times when I’ve been with friends and we just talk. You know those conversations where you really connect with your friends and feel so happy and energized by the conversation? Those times. And you know what, it didn’t take any money to make it happen.

Now I know, sometimes those moments just happen, you can’t really plan for it, but it goes to show that you don’t need to be in some extravagant location or spending tons at the latest hotspot in town. Sometimes the best moments happen hanging out on your friend’s couch or at a cheap pizza place.

I really love Disney. Specifically Walt Disney World. I don’t live anywhere near Orlando and it’s not really in my budget to rush off to Disney Parks all the time. But I can still find joy in Walt Disney World. I reminisce about my last trip and look at photos. I start thinking about and planning what I want to do on my next trip. Again, these things don’t take any money, and they make me really happy!

Think about the times you’ve been the happiest. How can you create more of those moments in your life? Try calling a friend, spending time with your family, or looking at the photos from your last vacation. Sometimes the simplest moments can bring the most joy.

Know when money can buy happiness

Sometimes we all need to step outside of our budget. Maybe it’s to take a great vacation. Maybe it’s for that luxury handbag we’ve been eyeing. Or maybe we just want to beef up our own bank account. Find your motivation and make sure it brings you joy. The vacation and the bag are simple: you can think about all the fun things you’ll do during your travels, or how great the bag will look with your fall wardrobe.

Adding to your savings is trickier, but definitely doable. Why are you trying to save? Are you unhappy at your job and want to be able to pursue your real dreams? Are you wanting to feel secure when an unexpected expense pops up? Bring in the visualization again. Think about how you’ll pursue your dream and all the extra time you’ll have when you won’t have to go to your current job. Think about how when you get a flat tire you won’t be as stressed because you know you’ll have the money to cover a replacement. A little bit of visualizing can go a long way.

Don’t forget to be grateful

When it comes to living a good life and being positive, I believe most optimists will tell you the secret is gratitude (Full Disclosure: I’m a natural-born pessimist and this was a not-so-scientific survey I conducted with my optimist mother). Be grateful for your loved ones. You have to be grateful for that wonderful vacation you took last year. Next, look at your finances and be grateful for the money you’ve saved, even if it’s not a lot. Recognize and be grateful for your goals and your dreams. Lastly, be grateful for your time and ability to read this article, for the clothes on your back, and the food you’ve had.

When you focus on and are grateful for the things you do have, it’s harder to think about what you’re lacking. Having a rich life doesn’t have to require a lot of money. Keeping your mind focused on the things you do have, and the moments that bring you joy will take you far towards having the best life for yourself.
